Crane Bogies: Choosing the Right Bogie Configuration for Overhead Cranes

28 September 2026

End Carriage Bogies

Compare crane bogies by wheelbase, wheel size, load ratings and drive requirements with Hydromech Hoist and Crane in Australia.

The right crane bogies are selected from calculated wheel loads, bridge geometry, runway details, travel duty and drive requirements. Matching these inputs before ordering helps the travel system fit the intended overhead-crane design.

Selecting Crane Bogies for the Complete Crane System

A bogie or end carriage connects the bridge to the runway and carries the wheels that enable long travel. Selection cannot be based on crane capacity alone. The designer must consider the bridge self-weight, hoist and trolley weight, lifted load, dynamic effects and how those forces are distributed across the wheels.

Our Hydromech standard bogie range includes options with 160 mm, 230 mm and 300 mm wheels. Listed wheelbases run from 2,000 mm to 6,500 mm, with different bearing, track-width, static-load, dynamic-load and drive specifications. Bolt-on bogies and heavy-duty options are also available on request. Project teams should use the current technical data and confirm the final arrangement with us before ordering.

Technical Inputs Required Before Selection

A useful enquiry provides more than the desired lifting capacity. Complete project information allows the configuration to be reviewed as part of the crane system.

Key inputs include:

  • Calculated wheel loads: Provide the maximum static and dynamic loads at each end carriage rather than relying only on rated lifting capacity.
  • Bridge span and geometry: Confirm the girder arrangement, span, end connections and available clearance around the runway.
  • Runway details: Identify the rail size, track width, support arrangement and verified alignment of the existing or proposed runway.
  • Travel requirements: State the required travel speed, operating frequency, acceleration expectations and application duty.
  • Drive configuration: Confirm the required drive arrangement, motor power, controls and electrical supply.
  • Installation method: Identify access restrictions and advise if a bolt-on or project-specific arrangement is being considered.
  • Operating environment: Note dust, moisture, heat or corrosive exposure that may influence component selection and maintenance.

These details help prevent incompatible wheel, rail, drive or connection choices from reaching installation.

Standard and Heavy-Duty Bogie Configurations

Standard models can suit many overhead-crane projects when the published dimensions and ratings match the engineered design. A larger wheel or longer wheelbase is not automatically better. Each option must suit the calculated loads, runway and bridge configuration.

Applications outside the listed range may require a heavy-duty or customised solution. Hydromech states that 380 mm, 500 mm and 700 mm bogies are available on request. We can review the project data and identify the information required for an appropriate recommendation.

Inspection Requirements After Installation

Correct selection does not remove the need for ongoing inspection. The Safe Work Australia guide to inspecting and maintaining cranes recommends checking wear on wheels and completing inspection and maintenance according to the manufacturer’s instructions or a competent person’s specifications.

Maintenance teams should monitor wheel wear, bearings, fasteners, drive components and travel behaviour. Uneven flange wear, unusual noise, vibration or skewed travel may indicate a runway, alignment or component issue requiring assessment. Our article on maintaining end carriage bogies provides additional guidance without replacing the crane’s documented inspection programme.

Confirm Your Crane Bogie Requirements

Hydromech Hoist and Crane is an Australian family-owned supplier and manufacturer of overhead cranes, hoists and related equipment. We provide standard bogies alongside customised lifting solutions and locally held service support.

Send the crane capacity, calculated wheel loads, bridge drawings, runway details, duty requirements and preferred delivery timeframe through our contact page. We can review your application, confirm the information still required and help you select crane bogies for your overhead-crane project.
